NANCY

the city of Art Nouveau

City of art and history, Nancy surprises with the richness and diversity of its heritage. Born in the Middle Ages, equipped with numerous Renaissance mansions and a Ducal Palace which are the charm of the old town, Nancy was endowed in the 18th century by the former King of Poland, Stanislas Leszczynski, with a remarkable architectural ensemble inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO today. But Nancy is also the emergence of Art Nouveau in the early twentieth century, which today places the city among the major European capitals of this major artistic movement. Through architecture, cabinet making, glass work, ironwork and ceramics, nature is everywhere, alive, splendid and colorful. The new part of town, including the Notre Dame of Bonsecours Church, the central market and shop owners will also participate in the Ducal City’s ongoing festivities. Numerous local culinary specialties like Bergamot, macaroons, duchesses, mirabelles, etc. also contribute to Nancy’s art de vivre.

Nearby, the city of Metz with its cathedral, the XVIth century Saint-Nicolas-du-Port Basilica, the Baccarat Crystallerie, and its military architecture are well worth a visit.
